Luke, portrayed with energy by Jasen Fisher, resides with his grandmother Helga (May Zetterling) following the unexplained loss of his parents. She’s taught him about witches, making him watchful when he and Bruno, a new friend who is always looking for food (played by Charlie Potter), encounter Eva (Angelica Huston) at a hotel by the sea. After overhearing her wicked plan as she speaks to a gathering of older women, Luke and his companion find themselves transformed into mice; now, he must reach his grandmother and alert her before all the world’s children disappear. The story moves along briskly and offers a diverting experience, full of incidents where the boys—now mice—must pilfer the potion and stop the witches' scheme. Jim Henson contributed some appropriately unsettling visuals, and the rest of the actors – particularly Bill Paterson as Bruno’s somewhat haughty father – contribute to the film's smooth progression over ninety minutes, leading up to a final scene that might make you hesitant about eating split pea soup for some time afterward. It shows its age in certain aspects, but it remains an entertaining movie for families, and I found it quite pleasing.
