Robert Eggers’ first feature film, *The Witch*, is quite good! I found myself engaged for all ninety minutes, and honestly, I could have watched more. The overall feeling of the movie was something I really appreciated, as well as its visual style. The writing deserves special recognition, too. The entire cast delivers strong performances, which is especially evident in that final scene where they are all together on screen. Harvey Scrimshaw is remarkably believable in that moment; I honestly wondered if they’d used a grown man and digitally altered him to play Caleb, because his performance was so impressive. Ellie Grainger and Lucas Dawson also stood out in that same scene—it's one of the most disturbing parts of the film as their characters writhe on the floor; seeing kids act like that always makes me uneasy. I feel obligated to mention Anya Taylor-Joy, who is consistently excellent throughout. Ralph Ineson and Kate Dickie deserve praise as well. I said in my review of (the worthwhile) *Nosferatu* that I wasn’t sure how this film would place within my personal list of Eggers' movies, considering the difference between what I thought of *The Lighthouse* (4/10) and *The Northman* (9/10). Ultimately, it sits a bit lower than *The Northman*; not by much, though. I’m eager to see what Eggers creates next, as long as it isn't something similar to his 2019 movie—then I’ll be excited to watch it.
