It proved to be a truly excellent horror movie. The way it was directed felt unique, and Robert Egger utilizes darkness and shadows in a manner that’s genuinely frightening. There were moments when the suspense became nearly too much to handle. The conversations are occasionally difficult to understand because they're written in an archaic style of English, which contributes to the historical feel of the story. The performers do a commendable job delivering this unusual language and portraying the growing anxiety within the family stemming from religious beliefs and superstitions. The movie draws its inspiration from records and writings of that period, meaning everything presented onscreen is derived directly from those sources with minimal alteration. It all lends to an impression of genuineness. It’s a welcome change to encounter a film that doesn't depend on sudden startling moments or irritating tactics meant to startle viewers. 'The Witch' manages to be unsettling without relying on cheap thrills. It becomes quite bizarre and graphic when necessary, and I personally found these unusual sequences captivating and informative; the movie almost feels like an actual historical record. ★★★★
