It’s reminiscent of the story about the boy who cried wolf. This excellent B-movie noir from RKO uses a familiar narrative structure—a variation on the legend of the boy who cried wolf—and features young Bobby Driscoll as Tommy, a child with a habit of inventing stories. Consequently, when he witnesses his upstairs neighbors committing murder one night, no one takes him seriously... The film carefully establishes the events leading up to the crime, showing us Tommy’s life in a small New York apartment building where his parents work hard and clearly care for their imaginative son. After the violent act occurs—a disturbing event made more unsettling by the fact that it's carried out by an ordinary-looking couple desperate enough to commit murder for money—the suspense really kicks in. Now endangered by the killers, Tommy must be stopped, so as the claustrophobic, sweltering tenement neighborhood is brought to life through noir cinematography, director Ted Tetzlaff and cinematographers Robert De Grasse & William O. Steiner do a great job creating an atmosphere of mounting paranoia and tension that culminates in a gripping final sequence which provides some relief. Featuring strong performances from Paul Stewart, Ruth Roman, Arthur Kennedy, and Barbara Hale, this late 1940s noir is definitely worth seeing. 8/10
