Wuchak on The Wilby Conspiracy

7/10 · Jun 4, 2025

Following an incident involving the police, a man campaigning against Apartheid (Sidney Poitier) and a British engineer (Michael Caine) must travel from Cape Town to Johannesburg, with hopes of reaching Botswana. The film was made at the start of 1974 and came out the following year. It’s directed by the same person who did “Soldier Blue” five years before; he's known for combining progressive political ideas with elements that are sensational or provocative, whether it involves violence or sexuality. Significant themes are mixed with lighthearted dialogue and dangerous situations. The portrayal of the Apartheid police state feels exaggerated, like something out of a comic book. However, both sides of the argument are shown fairly. Major Horn (Nicol Williamson), for example, mentions that the 3 million Caucasians created South Africa's cities, towns, infrastructure, factories, mines and farms and shouldn’t be told how to proceed by the 18 million blacks, referring to them as “20 years out of the trees.” Considering Apartheid ended more than thirty years ago, it makes you wonder how things are going. Think about the current legal confiscation of white-owned land and the violence against minority populations. It’s possible to say that whether we're looking back at the Apartheid era or what's happening now, the world is a messed up and unfair place. Regardless, the political and racial issues are engaging, and the story is generally entertaining with an action-filled finale. Prunella Gee and Persis Khambatta provide the female presence; you may recall the latter as the ‘Iliadroid’ in “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” four years later. It's a shame her career didn't really launch, considering what she could have achieved. The film is 1 hour, 45 minutes long and was filmed in Kenya and Pinewood Studios, which is near London, along with some establishing shots of Cape Town and other places in South Africa. GRADE: B-/B
