Jonathan Pryce portrays "Joe," a Nobel Prize-winning author who must accompany his wife, “Joan” (Glenn Close), to Stockholm to accept the honor from the Swedish King. Their journey begins aboard Concorde—a plane that actually didn't fly to Stockholm—and upon arrival, they find themselves celebrated by fellow literary figures and relentlessly pursued by "Nathanial" (Christian Slater), who is eager to pen a biography of Joe. Both husband and wife are uninterested in this attention, and it quickly becomes apparent that their son, “David” (Max Irons), also maintains distance from his father. Through some recollections of their early romance, we gain glimpses into their lives, revealing that much of what they present is merely an illusion, concealing a wealth of hidden resentments and marital discord. A conversation fueled by alcohol between the son and the journalist ignites a significant family conflict at a particularly inopportune moment! While Glenn Close delivers a notably detached performance deserving most of the acting recognition, Pryce’s work isn't bad either—unlike Christian Slater and Max Irons, who contribute very little to an easily predictable narrative. The film is passable enough, but there’s a lack of genuine connection between the characters, and it doesn’t feel authentic throughout. While the elaborate Nobel ceremony certainly doesn’t help matters, the overall effect is akin to a brief theatrical production that someone mistakenly believed would translate well into a movie—apparently without fully grasping how clinical it might appear on screen.
