Edward Woodward portrays Sgt. Howie, a Christian Scottish police officer dispatched to the isolated island of Summerisle to look into the vanishing of a young girl. The behavior of the pagan villagers—their seeming lack of concern or their defensive reactions regarding the child's disappearance or potential murder—is deeply troubling, particularly because everyone appears to be concealing something, even the girl’s peers. A frequent complaint about earlier, shortened versions of the film is that they don’t allow enough time for the gradual development of suspense and atmosphere. However, the Director’s Cut stands as a near-perfect work. The concept of this secluded pagan community—typically tranquil but occasionally engaging in rituals involving human sacrifice—is captivating. Woodward delivers an excellent performance as Howie, and Christopher Lee is equally impressive as Lord Summerisle. Furthermore, the film features a truly remarkable soundtrack that I’ve rarely encountered; it primarily consists of folk songs from within the film's world rather than typical “spooky” music. The conclusion of *The Wicker Man* has to be considered among the most startling in cinematic history. Because the movie maintains a relatively restrained tone until that point, the final outcome is all the more harrowingly convincing. I also found compelling the notion that, from the characters’ perspective on what happens after death, both Howie and the islanders receive some form of “benefit” from the concluding ritual. The islanders gain confidence in their crops' future success, while Howie experiences a martyr’s demise and anticipates a special place in heaven. Watching it prompted me to consider belief systems; there's no reason to assume that paganism is any less valid than other religions. All religious beliefs are maintained by faith and conviction rather than logic or proof. Provocative, oddly beautiful, and simply unsettling, the restored version of *The Wicker Man* has rightfully earned its cult following. Even if you don’t typically enjoy horror films, you're likely to find something worthwhile in this offering. The term "classic" feels like it was created specifically for this brilliant and unusual film.
