Reno on The Whole Truth

5/10 · Dec 14, 2016

It's a courtroom drama centered around a murder mystery involving a wealthy lawyer. The film begins with a defense attorney representing his teenage client, accused of killing his own father. The boy hasn’t spoken since the event, leaving his lawyer struggling to build a defense because no one seems to know what transpired except for him, making it difficult to demonstrate his innocence. How the trial concludes and the truth is revealed unfolds later in the story. It was tedious, though not entirely so. Primarily, the film felt lifeless and slow-paced. There wasn't any standout acting; Gugu was the only one who made a good impression in her limited role, while everyone else seemed lackluster. Keanu Reeves’ narration occasionally proved irritating. It was surprising to see Renee Zellweger looking so different six years after returning to acting – I even had to verify online that it really was her. The premise of the story wasn't inherently flawed, but there were problems with its execution. The script had issues; while the beginning seemed promising, the plot became predictable somewhere in the middle, and what remained was simply figuring out how everything played out. The ending felt overly detailed. After revealing the truth, they didn’t need to show so much of it visually, which, in my opinion, diminished the film's impact—making it seem rather unsophisticated. The writing also missed a key point regarding parenting, especially concerning the mother; any mother would naturally defend her child at all costs. That’s just how most mothers are, so it wasn't really the mother’s fault but the writers', who seemed to prioritize a twist and prolonged suspense above everything else. Overall, this is an average film that might appeal to both intelligent viewers and those with more basic tastes; however, it's not terrible for a one-time watch. _5/10_
