It makes me curious whether Peter Sellers drew inspiration from the endearing and somewhat clumsy "Fernando" (Alberto Soldi) in this rather enjoyable film. He travels to Rome with his newlywed, "Wanda" (Brunella Bovo), with a busy itinerary planned. His focus is on tradition; he wants to connect with relatives and properly introduce Wanda. However, she’s completely captivated by the famous movie star and cleverly arranges an encounter, without informing her husband. She anticipates just a quick greeting, but things quickly escalate as she's swept away to a coastal filming location by the crew. With no phone or train available, "Fernando" finds himself far from Wanda, dutifully fulfilling his family obligations while she’s missing! The story that follows involves both characters attempting to reunite and experiencing some humorous adventures along the way. I really hope they’re shooting a silent film because the noise on set is distracting; random people walking into takes and Wanda ending up in a harem costume all contribute to a rather disorganized production, which doesn't seem intended as a reflection of Fellini’s own methods. Meanwhile, "Fernando" becomes increasingly bewildered, frustrated, disoriented—and even finds himself experiencing some temptation. His uncle also brings up the fact that they have an appointment at 11am the next day – with the Pope, at the Vatican! Will they manage to reconcile before then? The situation itself is inherently funny, Soldi has a touch of Chaplin in his performance, and a solid supporting cast helps maintain the film’s brisk pace and genuine humor for almost ninety minutes.
