It’s difficult to find something new to say about 'The Whale,' but I will simply state: remarkable! Brendan Fraser delivers an absolutely stunning performance. I had heard about the praise and seen reports of the standing ovations he has earned, and it is completely justified. He is exceptional from the opening moments (even with that... haha) until the very end. It’s wonderful to see the actor who first appeared as a child in 'George of the Jungle' returning so successfully to acting. While Fraser has understandably received much of the (and it’s deserved) attention for Darren Aronofsky's film, I wasn’t sure what to anticipate from the other actors, and there are some truly excellent performances supporting him. Sadie Sink, Ty Simpkins, and Samantha Morton all give strong portrayals, but Hong Chau is particularly impressive – her work is superb! The movie contains several very moving moments. I don't often get emotional with fictional stories—my mind immediately recognizes them as 'not real,' and I can’t change that—but even I experienced significant chills and felt deeply affected by what unfolds on screen. Fraser, and Chau, are the primary reasons for this, but everyone—both in front of and behind the camera—deserves recognition for this 2022 film. It's essential viewing.
