The Whale will undoubtedly find its spot among the most emotionally affecting films of the year, progressing deliberately to a profoundly moving conclusion, largely thanks to what is arguably Brendan Fraser’s finest performance. While the supporting actors all help in developing a character that inspires considerable empathy, it's not an easy film to watch because of some unsettling and difficult scenes. Darren Aronofsky delivers a somber, heartfelt, and fundamentally straightforward narrative concerning trauma, acceptance, and maintaining hope. The director’s unfiltered approach could be upsetting for certain viewers, but the story’s core messages leave a lasting impression. Be prepared with tissues. Rating: B+
