I’m a big fan of films set on the frontier. The idea of imagining what life was like for those early settlers venturing into uncharted territory—a place with no rules or maps—is fascinating and lends itself well to compelling storytelling. "The Weight" isn't strictly a frontier movie, since it takes place in Klamath Falls during the Depression, which is considerably later, but it draws on similar themes by portraying a group of prisoners transporting gold through rough terrain, hoping for their release. The story’s surprises aren’t particularly inventive and the resolution feels standard and entirely foreseeable, yet it's still an enjoyable film with visuals that elevate the experience.
