This film brings to mind “The Proposal” from 2009, as it follows a similar premise, but with two gay couples involved in a deceptive plan. One couple hopes this scheme will secure a green card, while the other seeks funding for fertility treatments. Chris (Bowen Wang) has been in a long-term relationship with his affluent Korean boyfriend, Min (Han Gi-Chan), yet refuses to commit to marriage, much to Min’s frustration—he's also facing pressure from his family who want him back home to join the business and marry someone they approve of. Simultaneously, Chris’s friend Lee (Lily Gladstone) and her girlfriend Angela (Kelly Marie Tran) are struggling with IVF treatments. It seems like a convenient marriage could resolve both sets of issues. The story stretches believability, but things get even more complicated when Min's grandmother (Youn Yuh-jung) arrives from Seoul, determined to uncover the truth and safeguard her grandson from what she believes is a financial manipulation. She quickly grasps the situation, leaving the couples hoping she’ll accept their arrangement or risk exposure. While there are some humorous moments sprinkled throughout, anyone familiar with American LGBTQ+ cinema has likely encountered this storyline before. Wang doesn't offer anything particularly fresh, and the plot veers too far into implausibility for my taste; what begins as a silly idea quickly becomes increasingly ridiculous, leading to characterizations that slide into uncomfortable stereotypes. I do wish it performs well financially, though—Han Gi-chan probably deserves a good meal!
