The Watchers represents Ishana Night Shyamalan's first time directing a feature film, with M. Night Shyamalan acting as producer. For this project, Ishana adapted the novel The Watcher for the screen. The narrative follows Mina, an immigrant from the United States living in Ireland and employed at a pet shop. She is sent to deliver something in the countryside, but finds herself stuck in a forest. While searching for shelter, she comes across an old structure with only three walls and a window. Inside, she encounters three people who tell her that they are unable to leave because unseen entities are always observing them and preventing their departure. The film’s visual presentation is noteworthy, suggesting Ishana Night Shyamalan's capabilities as a director. The setting of the forest and the unsettling, partially dilapidated building work well together to establish a feeling of loneliness and suspense. However, the story itself doesn't quite live up to its potential. It feels stretched out, with some parts that don’t entirely click. The film’s tempo slows down at times, which diminishes the sense of anticipation instead of amplifying it. The acting is also a problem. The performances feel flat, and the characters sometimes make decisions that seem strange or uninspired. Mina's interactions with the other people trapped there lack depth and emotional connection, making it difficult to sympathize with her situation. These supporting characters don’t manage to create any real impact either, adding to the overall sense of detachment. The ideas of isolation and being watched have potential, but they aren’t fully explored in this movie. The notion of a constant, unseen presence could have been used to develop a more intense psychological thriller. Unfortunately, it doesn't quite work out that way, leading to a story that feels disconnected and unbelievable. Ultimately, The Watchers is visually appealing but doesn't manage to connect on a deeper level. While Ishana Night Shyamalan demonstrates promise in her ability to create atmosphere and tension, the film suffers from uninspired performances, a confusing plot, and underdeveloped characters. It’s not particularly memorable and doesn’t have much of an effect. Still, I am interested in seeing what Ishana does next as a director, with the hope that she can improve on these areas and make a more unified and captivating movie.
