The film centers on "Lomax" (Kirk Douglas), who holds a deep grudge against "Jackson" (John Wayne) and intends to kill him upon his release from prison. While awaiting that moment, "Jackson" is devising a scheme to take gold from a grasping mining owner named "Pierce" (Bruce Cabot). A partnership seems possible, and "Lomax" consents, requesting compensation—a daily fee plus extra for any gunplay. They then need to assemble a team. As their preparations advance, they encounter an unexpected obstacle: "Pierce" has acquired an armored wagon equipped with a Gatling gun capable of rapid fire. This forces them to revise their strategy and seek assistance from the local Indians, led by "Levi Walking Bear" (Howard Keel), along with the shady but clever "Wes" (Keenan Wynn), who is married to a woman young enough to be his daughter, and the inexperienced "Billy" (Robert Walker Jr.), whose presence might ultimately hinder rather than help. The final portion of the movie delivers some of the best action sequences I’ve seen in a western, featuring intense fighting, explosions, yelling Indians, and a touch of satisfying retribution. Wayne, Douglas, and Wynn have good chemistry together, and Cabot convincingly portrays the arrogant, well-dressed antagonist. It's a genuine western experience that I found quite entertaining.
