This isn’t among Charlton Heston’s stronger performances. He portrays "Cyrysagon," a figure dispatched to restore control to an isolated Norman stronghold consistently under attack by blond Friesians. Joining him are his brother, "Draco" (Guy Stockwell), and his faithful aide, "Bors" (Richard Boone). They quickly find themselves in conflicts with their adversaries while also encountering the beliefs of the local populace, a mostly pagan group where the lord has initial claim on any newlywed woman. This is how "Bronwyn" (Rosemary Forsyth) enters the picture—much to the displeasure of her intended and the village priest (Maurice Evans). After seizing a young boy during one of their raids, they are unaware of his significance. With the Normans trapped within the tower, their only chance lies in the arrival of support; otherwise, they might eventually understand the importance of their spirited new companion! It's not exactly surprising—it simply isn’t that remarkable. Everyone seems to be having a bad time, including Heston and Boone. Forsyth delivers a stiff performance, and Stockwell, as the increasingly agitated and envious brother, is really the only person who manages to offer something even remotely engaging. The film has visual appeal; it's obvious money was invested—but not in the script or plot. It’s disappointing.
