Wuchak on The War Lord

5/10 · Oct 25, 2021

This 1965 Charlton Heston movie, “The War Lord,” is a forgettable adventure set in medieval times, similar to “The Vikings” but without much excitement. It follows a knight working for the duke of Normandy who travels to a village on the French coast to build a fortress against attacks from Frisians—people who lived along the coastline that’s now part of the Netherlands and Germany. Richard Boone plays the lord’s chief advisor, Guy Stockwell his brother, Maurice Evans a priest, and Rosemary Forsyth portrays a peasant woman. The film is comparable to “Braveheart,” but it doesn't come close to being as good—and I'm not even a big fan of “Braveheart.” There are some decent action sequences set in the medieval period, mainly toward the end, and the way society is shown with lords and peasants is interesting, although sometimes hard to follow. The movie’s depiction of pagan Druidic beliefs among the peasant population feels exaggerated. People who like Charlton Heston or films from the 1960s might find it worthwhile, but “Ironclad” does a better job covering similar ground. If you're looking for something more accurate to that era, “Robin and Marian” is a stronger choice. A significant problem with the story involves the controversial ‘lord’s right,’ or 'right of the first night,' supposedly a medieval custom allowing lords to have relations with women on their wedding nights—essentially giving them power to abuse serfs without repercussions. While some historians suggest this practice may have existed, many others believe it's a myth, as most references appear in later writings and there’s little real proof that nobles ever actually used it anywhere. There are numerous accounts mentioning it, but very few credible examples of its use. The movie has a running time of 2 hours and 3 minutes and was filmed mostly at Universal City in California, along with other locations throughout the state like Malibu, Maryville, and Colusa County. It receives a C grade.
