This film feels like a transgression against convention. The War Lord features Charlton Heston, Richard Boone, Rosemary Forsyth, Guy Stockwell, Maurice Evans, Niall MacGinnis, Henry Wilcoxon, and James Farentino, among its cast. Franklin J. Schaffner, who later won an Academy Award for Best Director with Patton, directed the film, while the screenplay is by PJohn Collier, adapted from Leslie Stevens’ play, The Lovers. The War Lord transports viewers to 11th-century Normandy, recreating a past era. It realistically portrays the period without romanticizing either the people or their existence. Pagan beliefs of that time are acknowledged, and the customs of the ruling class, specifically “droit de seigneur,” drive the narrative as Heston’s Duke finds himself drawn to the peasant woman (Rosemary Forsyth) he has a claim on, struggling with his conscience regarding these traditions. Schaffner skillfully combines the dialogue-driven story with well-executed battle sequences; the weaponry and strategies are notably effective.
