It takes a real commitment to view "The Wailing." This Korean horror-thriller, clocking in at nearly three hours, is a substantial piece of work. I think more than half its length could have been trimmed without losing anything important. The film gets caught up in an extended mystery—more accurately, it’s trying to identify the culprit—and while Do-won Kwak's performance as the lead was decent enough, the conversations felt grating throughout. It’s a recurring issue I notice with Asian films and I suspect it comes down to cultural differences. The dialogue often seems so commonplace and unnecessary that many movies could be shortened to just a handful of key lines, leaving the rest of the time for silence. This one follows suit. Jun Kunimura gave the strongest performance, using subtle expressions effectively and thankfully keeping his words to a minimum—something I definitely appreciated. The visuals were well-done, and I found the gore effects convincing, especially in depictions of crime scenes rather than with the "possessed zombie" elements. Considering both its strengths and weaknesses, "The Wailing" ultimately settles into an average territory.
