The Visit seemed like it could be really good, but ultimately, it doesn't quite work because of issues common to M. Night Shyamalan’s movies. The film does stand out though, thanks to the skillfully built suspense. Shyamalan combines aspects of found footage with elements reminiscent of Paranormal Activity, resulting in something distinctive and disturbing. It was a genuinely frightening experience, and I felt very anxious throughout, particularly during the scenes set at night. Watching it on my laptop, in the dark, while wearing headphones probably added to that feeling. The narrative itself is quite original. The grandparents’ unsettling demeanor is creepy but also feels believable. They almost seem possessed at times, and the ending explanation only amplifies how scary the whole film is. Shyamalan handles the found footage aspects adequately, though it's not particularly innovative. However, the screenplay and performances are where the movie starts to seriously stumble. I don’t want to fault the actors too much because they were given such awful dialogue to work with. It’s so stiff and unnatural that every conversation feels like it was written by someone pretending to be human. This disrupted the film's rhythm and made parts of it hard to get through. I appreciate the originality and the unsettling atmosphere, but Shyamalan let a chance pass to make something truly remarkable. With better writing and stronger acting, this movie could have been outstanding. Still, it’s worth seeing for its unique and scary story. Score: 65% 👍 Verdict: Decent
