A pleasant visit with relatives? The Visit is the work of writer and director M. Night Shyamalan, featuring Olivia DeJonge, Ed Oxenbould, Deanna Dunagan, Peter McRobbie, and Kathryn Hahn. Becca and Tyler have never encountered their grandparents; their mother departed from that family years ago under difficult conditions. Now they’re traveling to spend some time with them—and discovering much more than anticipated. Some will argue Shyamalan didn't possess any particular talent initially, so this doesn't represent a comeback for them. However, it does show him in a solid place. Stepping away from expensive productions and embracing a simpler style, he’s returned to familiar territory with unsettling elements. The story is certainly bizarre; the initial setup and the (very effective) explanation aren't groundbreaking within their genre, but there's a distinct feeling of discomfort, a compelling sense of mystery, and several truly disturbing moments. The final third descends into an almost dreamlike state as the narrative progresses through its strange fairy tale progression, and the small cast is superb, with Shyamalan once again demonstrating his skill in directing younger performers. It’s a straightforward thriller that doesn't try to be anything more. 7/10
