It makes you wonder if he’s a film prodigy—I certainly thought I was a pretty good actor once. This feels like another attempt by Shyamalan to recapture his earlier successes, but it's been ten years since he’s had anything truly successful. He seems to have lost the support of major actors and studios, which led him to making films with younger casts over his last few projects. And this one follows a similar pattern: two young siblings traveling to visit their grandparents in a rural area. Things start off calmly enough, but the grandparents' strange actions begin to unsettle the children. The story then unfolds with some kind of twist. This PG13 rated horror-thriller uses a "found footage" style. Whether what’s happening is actually real or just part of a school project remains unclear, and the movie never really clarifies that point. It's not particularly frightening, aside from a few moments. The story has potential, but overall it was just an average film. Only four characters drive the entire plot, and the two children give notably strong performances. Despite doing well at the box office, I have to admit I felt let down by almost everything about it. Shyamalan is capable of more than this, although he’s had several opportunities to demonstrate it that haven't quite lived up to expectations. Eventually, he will need to deliver a surprising hit and revitalize his career—that’s what I’m hoping for—but it doesn't seem likely to happen quickly. This movie is better than some of his recent work; it stays within its limitations. I would recommend watching it once, but that's about it. 6/10
