Barbara Stanwyck delivers another memorable performance as "Martha," inhabiting a notably well-crafted western. The narrative follows familiar ground—a prosperous cattle owner attempting to eliminate intermediaries—but, paired with a respectable showing from Glenn Ford ("Parrish"), it tells a straightforward tale of avarice and resolve, conveying a feeling of resistance and frontier fortitude. She maintains a marriage and affection for the disabled "Lew" (Edward G. Robinson), while also engaging in an ongoing relationship with his brother, "Cole" (Brian Keith). Ford portrays a post-Civil War veteran and modest rancher who refuses to be defeated when his livestock is driven off and his situation becomes increasingly dangerous. Fortunately, his military background provides him with some advantage in protecting himself, and the stage is slowly set for an ending that encapsulates aspiration, disloyalty, and a measure of atonement. There's ample action involving firearms and horses, and Rudolph Maté’s direction is unobtrusive, letting the actors utilize impactful dialogue and striking wide-angle shots to present an enjoyable story.
