John Chard on The Village

8/10 · Feb 7, 2019

It’s an appealing story that feels relevant today. This is simply my own perspective; I don’t intend for this to sway anyone’s view, regardless of what they might say or do – my feelings about the movie will remain unchanged. I perceived a thoughtfully made film centered on fear and hope, depicting a group of people living in apprehension regarding those beyond their boundaries. The characters are engaging enough to hold my attention, and the setting is beautiful and captivating. Manoj Night Shyamalan’s fourth widely released motion picture has unfortunately become, as many would acknowledge, negatively impacted by an inadequate promotional campaign. While there are frightening aspects within the film – which I won't describe in detail – they aren't the typical startling-monster kind that some were anticipating. The conclusion seems to let down a number of viewers, but it didn’t bother me because this is where the movie truly connects and its message comes across clearly. The actors deliver strong performances overall, and Shyamalan directs with a measured and thoughtful hand. It isn't perfect, certainly, but it's a well-constructed work that conveys considerable meaning if you are willing to accept what it’s offering. Overall, it's a very dependable and stimulating piece made with evident craftsmanship. 8/10
