There’s no denying that leaving the theater after seeing Keith Thomas’s first film at 11 PM left me feeling somewhat unsettled. Dave Davis portrays Yakov, a man facing hardship, reliant on strong medication, and trying to recover from a difficult experience in his history. A religious leader requests that he take on the role of "Shomer," someone who keeps vigil with the deceased, offering prayers and protecting against negativity before the funeral. While watching over the body, predictable horror elements begin—lights dimming, unexplained noises—making it a fairly standard horror movie in those respects. However, as his anxieties increase, he finds himself dealing with his own personal struggles alongside confronting the malevolent "Mazzik" that thrives on fear. Besides brief appearances from the deceased’s wife, played by Lynn Cohen, the film largely rests on Davis's performance, which is adequate, helped along by the dimly lit setting and a tense musical score that occasionally feels excessive. It doesn't manage to be truly frightening, but it remains a worthwhile production drawing upon folklore seldom explored in Hollywood films. I’d recommend watching it late at night when it’s dark outside.
