This movie, despite a single moment that strains credulity, proves to be a solid psychological mystery/thriller set in the backwoods. A husband and wife traveling in an RV—played by Thomas Jane and Anne Heche—find themselves at a secluded Alabama lake near Thanksgiving. When their young daughter disappears without explanation, the local sheriff gets involved (Jason Patric). “The Vanished,” released in 2020, was initially called “Hour of Lead,” and it’s presented as a wilderness-based psychological drama/mystery/thriller. There's one sequence roughly twenty-four minutes into the film that feels poorly conceived and could have been handled more skillfully. However, if you’re willing to overlook that unbelievable stretch, the movie delivers some unexpected twists and ultimately proves worthwhile; it possesses a distinct quality. The visuals of the wooded waterways are exceptional, especially the shots taken from above. Aleksei Archer makes an impression as the attractive young woman in the story, but her character could have been explored further. I appreciated how the film gradually develops its characters, even those who appear briefly, like the Sheriff, a shy boy, and the store owner. As expected, the central focus remains on the couple and their psychological complexities. The movie has a running time of 1 hour, 55 minutes, and was filmed in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, primarily around Lake Nicol. GRADE: B
