Lionel Atwill delivers a genuinely frightening performance as "Dr. von Niemann." People in a deeply superstitious European village begin to die—completely drained of blood—leading locals to believe vampirism is at work. Melvyn Douglas portrays someone with a more questioning mindset, and he chooses to look into the situation more closely. It rises above the typical gothic mystery fare; Fay Wray also brings a touch of elegance to the film. There’s nothing laughably dated about the effects—and surprisingly, there's no musical score, just a few solid acting turns and an unsettling murder narrative that unfolds over approximately one hour.
