I first watched this film in the movie theater back in 1957, and I consider it my absolute top pick for vampire films. It moves along quickly, creates a sense of suspense, and the makeup was well done. There’s one sequence where the vampire is pursuing his nurse down the street toward her home that really frightened me—I was just ten years old at the time. Another memorable moment occurs at night in the vampire's house when his daughter knocks on his bedroom door, unaware he has transformed and escaped through a window! It doesn’t rely heavily on special effects, and I imagine many viewers today might find it boring, but it remains my personal favorite. You can find it on DVD—there are four films included on one disc, and they're all worthwhile. Your 1950's SF/Horror Critic, David
