Who exactly IS Keyser Söze? Frankly, who could possibly care? "The Usual Suspects," released in 1995 and directed by Bryan Singer, is a crime drama/mystery centering on five criminals who join forces to get even with the police (Kevin Spacey, Gabriel Byrne, Steve Baldwin, Kevin Pollak, and Benicio Del Toro). Following their initial success, these five are drawn into a far more dangerous operation by the notorious criminal Keyser Söze. One of them is apprehended and questioned by law enforcement officers (Chazz Palminteri & Giancarlo Esposito). The central question remains: Who IS Keyser Söze? Pete Postlethwaite appears as Söze's right-hand man, while Suzy Amis portrays the girlfriend of one of the criminals. This film relies heavily on a "twist ending," and I feel it’s too dependent on that element. The entire movie feels like an exercise in waiting for the twist to be revealed; it isn't particularly enjoyable to watch. Much of the dialogue is quite dull, only gaining some significance at the very end. Furthermore, the main characters are simply rude, tough, and unsavory individuals, although Spacey’s character does offer a degree of interest. It becomes nearly impossible to develop any emotional investment in them; I honestly couldn't have cared less if they had all eliminated each other. While the ending is clever in certain respects, everything leading up to it isn’t really worth enduring. As for the twist itself, I was able to narrow down the identity of the mysterious figure to two possibilities, and I guessed correctly. However, there are some intriguing details surrounding the twist that I doubt anyone could deduce without knowing the ending beforehand and then re-watching the film. Regardless, after seeing it once, I don’t feel any desire to watch it again; the story and characters aren't compelling enough. The movie didn’t engage me sufficiently for a repeat viewing. Filmmakers should understand that a truly memorable movie needs to focus on the journey, not just the destination. For me, "The Usual Suspects'" complicated journey is simply tedious and laborious. If I had connected with the characters or cared about their fates, I might have been more interested, but that wasn’t my experience. On several occasions while watching the five main men talk amongst themselves, I was struck by a sense that these were actors pretending to be "cool" tough guys rather than embodying genuine characters—a troubling sign. I'm surprised by the high rating this movie has on IMDb; it’s seriously overrated. The film runs 106 minutes and was filmed in Los Angeles and New York City. GRADE: C- ***SPOILER ALERT*** I want to be clear that my criticism isn’t based on pretending to have anticipated the twist (as mentioned above, I correctly identified who the mysterious man probably was, but not all of the specifics). The issue is that the entire movie revolves around listening to someone fabricate a story. So, essentially, we learn there was a ship burned and Kevin Spacey's character doesn’t actually have a limp. Okay, thanks for wasting my time with everything else. Wonderful storytelling (eye roll).
