I went into watching The Usual Suspects hoping to understand what everyone was so enthusiastic about, but I ended up feeling a little underwhelmed. Still, there were definitely some good things about it. Technically, the film is quite well-made. Bryan Singer's direction stood out, especially considering this was only his second feature film. My main issue with The Usual Suspects was the writing. While I found the story and dialogue interesting, the execution didn’t quite live up to expectations. Specifically, the beginning felt choppy and hard to follow. The movie just drops you in with these suspected criminals without providing much background or explaining how they're connected. Introducing new characters only made things more complicated and tangled, making it difficult to keep track of everything that was happening. Things started to become clearer around the end of the second act, which made the rest of the film a bit more pleasurable. The acting was uneven; some performances were really good, like those from Kevin Spacey and Gabriel Byrne. But other characters felt exaggerated and cartoonish, like Benicio del Toro’s character. A big reason people talk about The Usual Suspects is because of its supposed amazing twist ending. I anticipated it pretty easily though, which was a letdown. Maybe the music will grow on me with another viewing, but for now, three stars feels right. That rating is mostly because of how well-made it is from a technical perspective; otherwise, it would probably only get two and a half. Score: 56% ⚠️ Verdict: Decent
