I’ve always liked the line, "I don't believe in God, but I'm afraid of him." I do believe in God, though, and what genuinely frightens me is Keyser Soze. Bryan Singer directed The Usual Suspects, with a script by Christopher McQuarrie. It features Gabriel Byrne, Kevin Spacey, Kevin Pollack, Stephen Baldwin, Benicio Del Toro, Chazz Palminteri, Pete Postlethwaite, Giancarlo Esposito and Dan Hedaya in the cast. John Ottman composed the music, and Newton Thomas Sigel handled the cinematography. The story unfolds mainly within an L.A. interrogation room, where Verbal Kint (Spacey) tries to convince law enforcement officials that a legendary criminal mastermind, Keyser Soze, not only exists but was also responsible for drawing him and four other individuals into a multi-million dollar robbery that culminated in an explosion at San Pedro harbor – with very few surviving the event. It quietly appeared in movie theaters back in 1995 without much promotion or advance praise. However, it wasn't long before people started talking about The Usual Suspects as possibly being the must-see film of the year. Singer and McQuarrie, who were relatively new to directing and screenwriting, created a superb example of crime/mystery/noir plotting through complex plot twists and clever misdirection. At its heart, the story asks a simple question: Who is Keyser Soze? His reputation inspires absolute dread; some might even say he’s akin to the devil himself. The film consists largely of scenes presented as flashbacks narrated by Kint while police pressure him for information. We meet the five criminals who comprise the suspects mentioned in the title, and their conversations are full of macho humor. The introduction of Postlethwaite's Kobayashi character, one of Soze’s harbingers of doom, only intensifies the story's wonderfully convoluted intrigue. Everything leads to a conclusion that leaves you questioning everything you’ve just witnessed. But here’s why the film continues to be so compelling even after multiple viewings: we've been tricked. As we appreciate the excellent performances from everyone involved, we realize we’ve experienced something truly timeless within its genre. The value of watching it again remains incredibly strong, even decades later. The passage of time and the availability of home video releases have only enhanced the film's legendary status. Behind-the-scenes conflicts and personal opinions on set actually contribute to the character portrayals, as does one individual’s mistaken belief that he himself must be Soze. There are clues scattered throughout the movie that will eventually reveal who Soze is – imagine that! And it goes on from there. The Usual Suspects is a film that continues to reward viewers. 10/10
