This is among the finest gangster films ever created, and DePalma does a superb job with Mamet’s dynamic writing. The acting is exceptional; DeNiro effortlessly conveys menace as Capone, which is remarkable, while Andy Garcia's portrayal of George Stone offers a genuinely enjoyable sense of youthful determination. However, that isn’t quite enough to guarantee success because the main performers really need to elevate the movie. Connery delivers a reliably strong performance (the accent aside, but it hardly detracts from such a well-defined character), yet Costner as Eliot Ness is truly outstanding—a captivating portrayal that skillfully combines heartfelt portrayals of family affection with brief glimpses into darker impulses in his quest for good over evil. I appreciate how the film explores the impact of violence and fear on families; the relationship between mother and child forms a crucial element of the story's emotional core, and it's noticeable how some of the more intense moments are followed by gentle scenes depicting Ness and his family. The action sequences are exciting and memorable, including an energetic confrontation at the Canadian border and a thrilling rooftop chase and showdown. But the most impressive spectacle is DePalma’s brilliant homage to Battleship Potemkin during the sequence at the Union train station, which really stands out as the film approaches its conclusion. Does it matter if historical accuracy takes a back seat when the movie is this well-crafted? It's scary, moving, and even has some humorous moments. For me personally, it earns a perfect 10/10 across the board—even considering Sean’s accent. P.S. Ennio Morricone received an Academy Award nomination for his beautiful score, but he later repurposed parts of it for the main theme in John Carpenter's "The Thing" from 1982; they must have overlooked that at the time, presumably due to the shared genre!
