The film centers around Joan Crawford portraying “Manon,” whose father, portrayed by Nick De Ruiz, runs a circus. She finds herself desired by both strongman “Malabar” (Norman Kerry) and the arm-less knife thrower "Alonzo" (Lon Chaney). It turns out that "Alonzo" is hiding something, and as events unfold, it becomes clear he’s a criminal using an elaborate deception to evade capture. Meanwhile, Manon grows increasingly uncomfortable with unwanted attention from men, and “Alonzo,” unable to physically touch her, exploits this growing discomfort in the hope of winning her affection. When her father unexpectedly dies, she witnesses the event but doesn't see who committed it. Overcome with grief, she seeks comfort in "Malabar," while "Alonzo" resolves to make a substantial offering if he wants to win her and escape execution. I found myself genuinely enjoying this film. Lon Chaney is particularly impressive as the threatening knife thrower, and there’s enough substance to the story to develop characters you might actually become invested in. The final scene involving the strongman and horses felt perhaps a little extended, but it provides a suitable conclusion to a love triangle that avoids excessive sentimentality, instead focusing on the unpleasantness of the scheming antagonist and his accomplice "Cojo" (John George). Crawford certainly embodies a woman worth fighting over.
