It’s rare that I would describe something as cringe-inducing, but I think it applies to The Union. This film presents a strange combination of overtly patriotic political viewpoints and a folksy, down-home American style. In this story, "Team USA" is in charge globally, and the CIA—yes, they’re portrayed as the “good guys”—somehow requires assistance from an ordinary American worker to prevent worldwide disaster. The world being saved here is really just the insulated bubble of US exceptionalism that those in power reside within. Frankly, I found it difficult to endure. I managed about half before a strong feeling of discomfort made me turn it off. There’s a possible benefit for viewers who are American and genuinely accept this perspective; then maybe it could be an acceptable action spy movie. Mark Wahlberg is as charming as he always is, and the action sequences aren't poorly executed. Ultimately, while it might appeal to some US audiences, I don’t believe it will resonate well with international viewers who are aware of the true nature of the US establishment. I’ll be giving this one a miss.
