This horror movie just doesn’t offer much to get excited about; it's honestly quite average. Following "Anna" (played by Emily Browning), we see her struggling intensely after losing her mother in a fire. After attempting suicide, she spends ten months in an institution before being released back into her father's care. "Steven" (David Strathairn) seems unprepared to handle his daughter’s emotional state, and things don't improve when he marries "Rachel" (Elizabeth Banks), who used to be his late wife’s nurse. The relationship between this new stepmother and daughter isn’t going well at all, and eventually, Anna and her sister, "Alex" (Arielle Kebbel), start wondering if their mother’s death was really an accident. Anna's suspicions are intensified by what she believes are ghostly visits from their deceased mother. The film feels like a strange combination of mystery, supernatural horror, and family drama. The performances are standard, the dialogue is overly verbose, and there isn't nearly enough suspense before reaching an ending that didn’t quite meet my expectations—though I suppose I should have seen it coming! There needed to be something unusual about this otherwise straightforward story; otherwise, why remake it from the 2003 Korean film "Tale of Two Sisters"? It is competently made, with acceptable special effects and a rhythm that prevents it from dragging, but it would have benefited from more attention paid to developing the characters and presenting a darker, more unsettling version of the story.
