It’s clear this western was designed with commercial success as a priority, resulting in an acceptable film featuring John Wayne portraying a rugged American colonel and Rock Hudson as a sophisticated, impoverished Confederate colonel who joins forces with his former soldiers after the Civil War. Their mission involves delivering horses to Emperor Maximilian of Mexico. Along their journey, they experience various incidents reminiscent of "Red River," before facing significant betrayal that endangers both them and their animals. A certain rapport develops between the two leads; their contrasting personalities generate occasional moments of amusement as they travel. Ben Johnson, Bruce Cabot, and a young Jan-Michael Vincent also contribute to the narrative, maintaining a consistent pace, though not always generating excitement. The film’s length felt excessive—until the final quarter hour, when the action picks up. There isn't enough happening for much of the runtime to hold your attention completely, but it demonstrates why both actors were major stars and makes it reasonably worthwhile viewing.
