The story, adapted from Charles Kingsley’s poem, depicts a young woman (Linda Arvidson) saying farewell to her fisherman husband (Arthur V. Johnson) and his companions as they head out in a small boat to fish the Atlantic for their living. She resides in what appears to be a collection of beach-huts and each morning she comes outside to gaze toward the sea, but when tragedy strikes one day, her worries intensify. Despite having a young daughter to care for, she must remain strong so that her child can mature, eventually becoming Mary Pickford and marrying Charles West—another man engaged in similarly dangerous work as her husband. Viewers are privy to information about what happens to this man, but the question remains whether he will ever be reunited with his beloved. Although it presents a rather somber situation, there is still a sense of optimism present, and the straightforwardness of the single camera filming enhances the feeling of a life that was both ordinary and essential for these courageous men’s families. It offers an interesting look at a lifestyle that no longer exists.
