It’s genuinely heartwarming to see Disney adapt this classic Hans Christian Andersen tale. The film opens with parents eagerly anticipating their fifth chick, which arrives but immediately appears different from its siblings and is cast aside. Left to manage on its own, the little bird attempts to connect with others, finding everything strange and new. Eventually, things turn around, and it’s true that Andersen's stories consistently contained a meaningful lesson at their heart, and this one seems particularly suited for a version handled with gentle music and careful visuals—thankfully avoiding the usual musical numbers. It works surprisingly well.
