I have to say this is easily among my favorite "Tom" and Jerry" shorts. In this one, it’s “Jerry” who has his accident-prone young companion, “Nibbles,” tagging along with him, while “Tom” finds himself employed by a mean Cardinal tasked with safeguarding an extravagant feast. He understands that he absolutely must prevent the "Mouseketeers" from interfering, because Madame La Guillotine is what awaits him if he fails. Naturally, we all realize there’s practically no way he can outsmart his clever and resourceful little adversary. The locations—featuring suits of armor, a huge roasted pig, and an enormous cheese tower—create opportunities for numerous comedic episodes as poor “Tom” repeatedly meets with misfortune. As always, the upbeat music enhances the playful atmosphere, and with the energetic young mouse also becoming something of a pawn in the chaos, there's plenty of action and adventure; you really shouldn’t try to shield yourself behind an apple during a sword fight! It's nonstop entertainment that is genuinely enjoyable, although it could have benefited from just a touch of Ronald Colman.
