And Lenny Abrahamson’s ‘The Little Stranger,’ which deserves far more recognition, isn't really a horror movie at all—it functions better as an expertly made contained drama with supernatural elements. These examples show that there is definitely space for these kinds of stories set in old, gloomy houses. However, 'The Turning' illustrates that creating truly effective scares requires more than just constructing a creepy setting, adding some spiders, forcing viewers into it, and simply crossing your fingers.
