If you've ever felt that Simon Cowell exerts too much control over television, prepare to meet "Christof" (Ed Harris), who has constructed a massive dome visible from space. Inside this dome live numerous actors whose roles constantly shift, all so the outside world can observe the life of one man. "Truman Burbank" (Jim Carrey) believes he's living an ordinary, uncomplicated existence that has led him to happily being married to “Meryl” (Laura Linney). He hasn’t quite realized that each day is remarkably similar to the last, but if things are working well... then why change them? However, odd occurrences begin to spark a mental challenge to his idyllic life. Truman starts to perceive just how artificially predictable everything around him is, while also remembering "Lauren" (Natascha McElhone), who vanished mysteriously from a late-night beach meeting. When he accidentally hears the talkback frequency on his car radio and then discovers some carelessly placed stage props, he begins to question the nature of his reality – and he’s in for quite a surprise! But what can he do? Every attempt he makes to “escape” is blocked, and it's obvious that he has an intense fear of water. Will he uncover the truth? In my opinion, this is Carrey’s finest performance, as he portrays a good-natured but somewhat empty character who transforms into someone far more resourceful than many—even his manipulator—would imagine. It's a darkly humorous critique of the repetitive lives that many people lead, year after year, with little variation to their comfortable routines. The script provides Carrey with an opportunity to deliver a believable and engaging portrayal, and praise should also go to his on-screen wife (Linney), who likely makes significant sacrifices for her role as she watches the man she loves become something of a personality disaster. Could this ever actually happen? Perhaps those old sailors were correct – and there is indeed an edge to our world, just as we understand it...?
