CinemaSerf on The Truffle Hunters

7/10 · Mar 27, 2022

This documentary about four older men—and their dogs—who forage for a highly prized ingredient in the Piedmont region was genuinely enjoyable. The film observes these individuals as they go about their work, revealing how their methods have remained largely unchanged over generations. It illustrates how middlemen take advantage of them, selling the rare mushrooms to restaurants at hugely inflated prices, which only increases the final cost to consumers—it certainly provides a fresh perspective on the concept of a "food chain." The people featured are fascinating and offer an amusing and captivating glimpse into this way of life, holding the viewer’s attention for close to ninety minutes. While the cinematography and overall production values are somewhat simple, and the sound could be improved, these elements surprisingly enhance the film's authenticity and the genuineness of those involved. The next time you order truffle mash or fries, perhaps remembering this will allow you to appreciate the taste even more.
