It felt like a disastrous dinner party—that’s really what it was. We discover early on that Sarah (Shirley Henderson) and her husband Tom (Alan Tudyk) are being forced to sell their expensive house due to repossession. For reasons I couldn't quite grasp, they decided to have old friends Richard (Rufus Sewell) and Beth (Olivia Williams) over for a meal. It was Beth who complicated matters by bringing along the mysterious Jessica (Indira Varma). The hostess and this guest clearly didn’t get along—it seemed like a relationship destined to fail—and as they drank (in very large glasses), tensions escalated, leaving all four with splitting headaches. What follows could have possibly been successful on stage; in fact, the whole film has a theatrical feel. However, I thought it was excessively frantic, artificial, and over-the-top. The performances weren't particularly strong either, especially Tudyk’s which felt flat, and the writing seemed more concerned with giving each character their individual moment rather than providing something genuinely funny—or even mildly amusing. There are a few lines that might elicit a chuckle, but not enough to elevate this feature-length project beyond being mostly unsuccessful. It will probably breeze through ninety minutes during a Christmas television showing, and little else, I’m afraid.
