Wuchak on The Trouble with Angels

6/10 · Dec 13, 2020

Two girls, Mary and Rachel, who enjoy causing mischief, are sent to a Catholic school. The story follows what happens when Mother Superior and the nuns attempt to guide these disruptive students toward adulthood. "The Trouble with Angels," released in 1966, draws from Jane Trahey’s 1962 biography “Life with Mother Superior,” which detailed her time at an all-girls Catholic school close to Chicago. This accounts for the understated nature of the story's various events. It functions as a mostly grounded drama that includes some enjoyable scenes, though it isn't intended to be a wild comedy. Although not on par with films like “The Parent Trap” (1961) and “Pollyanna” (1960), this remains a worthwhile Hayley Mills film featuring several funny moments. Hayley was nineteen years old when filming took place, and it’s fascinating to observe her portraying a rebellious teenager compared to the more cheerful young girl she played in those earlier movies. There's still some of that youthful charm present, but here she displays a more cynical attitude with a sharp sense of humor. Camilla Sparv is beautiful as one of the nuns, and former burlesque performer Gypsy Rose Lee makes an appearance as a dance instructor. The film’s length is 1 hour, 51 minutes, and filming occurred in Ambler and Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, just outside Philadelphia, with some exterior shots taken at Merion Train Station. Additional scenes were filmed in Southern California, including Los Angeles (the school pool), Beverly Hills (courtyards and other outdoor settings), and Monrovia (train station sequences). GRADE: B-/C+
