It's nice to revisit another older film starring John Wayne, because even though it’s dated, it remains entertaining. Being released in 1973, this is one of his later films. I find these later roles appealing, where he often portrays a curmudgeonly hero. This western delivers a good dose of classic charm and humor. The film kicks off with some genuine laughs when Lane hits his friend for bringing along someone unable to follow instructions. The ongoing grumbling and arguments between Lane and his two companions are definitely highlights that make the movie so enjoyable. The plot is fairly straightforward. A widow, whose husband was a bank robber, hires Lane and his friends to locate half a million dollars in gold he stole and concealed. Of course, other people are also looking for the treasure. The focus remains primarily on Lane and his group, with the others just sort of appearing in the background, which is a somewhat peculiar approach. Aside from brief appearances by a Pinkerton agent played by Ricardo Montalban—who many will always remember as Khan from Star Trek—the antagonists aren’t really fleshed out. They're essentially men on horseback riding across the landscape or firing at our protagonists. As with many American westerns, the scenery plays a significant role in the overall enjoyment. The decision to use an abandoned train wreck in the desert was distinctive and visually striking. I have to admit though that the “town” where the train arrived with Lane and where the final confrontation occurred was somewhat underwhelming; it resembled just three houses scattered around a water tower. The conclusion proved as funny as the opening scenes, maybe even more so. It was great watching Lane chase after the train and explain he intended to hold up a moving vehicle when asked why. Overall, this was 90 minutes of pure enjoyment.
