The performances are strong, with Jeremy Renner particularly noteworthy. I found this movie to be quite enjoyable, as it combines action, drama, and romance in a thoughtful and balanced way. The story unfolds in Boston, introducing us to a team of professional bank robbers, some carrying a legacy of crime and having spent their childhoods with imprisoned parents. They execute a bold robbery, forcing the bank manager to open the safe and join them during their getaway as a shield. Subsequently, concerned that she might identify them, one of the robbers begins watching her, which leads to an unexpected personal connection that could jeopardize their criminal endeavors. The script is well-crafted and demonstrates intelligence in its presentation and character development. While it doesn’t offer entirely new ground, drawing on familiar cinematic elements and themes explored in other, more accomplished films, it isn't particularly striking or remarkable overall. It’s not a masterpiece to be expected, but rather a solid piece of filmmaking that provides satisfactory entertainment. Ben Affleck directs as well as stars in the film, displaying assurance and skill in both roles. A familiar face, he delivers a compelling performance and leverages his natural charm effectively. Renner, though, gives an especially memorable portrayal, delivering what is arguably one of the most complete and impactful performances of his career (though not quite on par with “Hurt Locker,” it’s still very impressive). Rebecca Hall also contributes positively; she's undeniably beautiful and appealing, but more importantly, she embodies a character brimming with personality and charisma. John Hamm, Chris Cooper, and Blake Lively all provide solid supporting work as well. From a technical standpoint, the film merits praise for its visual effects, sound design, and special effects, particularly during the action sequences. There’s plenty of action to satisfy viewers, though it avoids excessive violence, and the robberies and chases are impressively elaborate and characteristic of Hollywood productions. The filmmakers made good use of locations and sets, and the cinematography is stylish, well-executed, and complemented by skillful editing. However, most other aspects, including the musical score, feel fairly ordinary.
