Wuchak on The Town that Dreaded Sundown

6/10 · Mar 19, 2021

Sixty-seven years have passed since the Texarkana Moonlight Murders of 1946, and a new unidentified assailant has emerged, mimicking those earlier crimes with attacks that often happen in secluded spots. “The Town That Dreaded Sundown” (2014) isn’t a direct reboot of the 1976 film; it functions as something of a sequel that plays with the original's concepts. Familiarity with the first movie is helpful, given the numerous nods to it, and this new entry makes for a good pairing with that one. As anticipated, the production values are noticeably improved, especially regarding the color palette and camera work, along with the depiction of violence; however, the editing occasionally feels rushed, as seen in the scene set within the cornfield. There’s also more explicit content than I prefer, including some disturbing elements—though I did find it somewhat diverting. The movie seems to combine aspects of the original film with influences from “Freddy vs. Jason” (2003), the 2009 reimagining of “Friday the 13th,” and “Scream” (1996), alongside the more risqué nature of “Psycho III” (1986). Addison Timlin delivers a solid performance as Jami, the protagonist. Morganna Bridgers is also present as Kendra, a character excited about her boyfriend’s return from overseas, and Lanee Landry portrays Ardele. These three actresses all contribute something worthwhile to the film. Veteran actress Veronica Cartwright has a role as well. The movie's length is 1 hour and 26 minutes, and filming took place in Texarkana, situated on the border of Texas and Arkansas, along with Shreveport, Louisiana. GRADE: B-/C+
