The 1974 film "The Towering Inferno," directed by John Guillermin, focuses on a disaster unfolding in San Francisco—specifically, the world's tallest building, The Glass Tower (a structure of 138 stories), which erupts into flames because of an electrical fault and puts hundreds of lives at risk during its dedication celebration. Paul Newman portrays the architect, Steve McQueen is the fire chief, William Holden takes on the role of a wealthy contractor, and Richard Chamberlain embodies his self-important son-in-law who cuts corners. Despite having a remarkable ensemble cast and achieving significant box office success, this extravagant disaster movie doesn't measure up to "The Poseidon Adventure," which came out two years prior. It’s missing the captivating narrative, the strong focus on individual characters, and an unforgettable musical score—even though John Williams composed both soundtracks—and it runs for 48 minutes longer than “Poseidon,” contributing to a feeling of sluggishness; however, the final thirty minutes are quite absorbing. The film also features Faye Dunaway, who is visually appealing as the architect’s romantic interest, Susan Blakely, looking good in fitted trousers, and Susan Flannery, appearing attractive in a shirt and underwear. Sadly, while "Poseidon" made excellent use of its female characters, “Towering” doesn't fully utilize what it has to offer. The movie does have some positive aspects and remains worth watching for those who appreciate the cast or enjoy 1970s disaster films. Nevertheless, it’s disappointing when compared to its more polished predecessor and what it could have been. "The Towering Inferno" has a running time of 2 hours and 45 minutes and was filmed in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Stirling Silliphant penned the screenplay, adapting from “The Tower” by Richard Martin Stern and "The Glass Inferno" by Thomas N. Scortia & Frank M. Robinson.
