Amazon Prime’s acquisition of The Tomorrow War from Paramount was a significant decision, as this special effects-heavy film featuring Chris Pratt reportedly cost around $200 million for the streamer to obtain, following similar purchases of other Paramount titles. Pratt portrays Dan Forester, a former soldier who's recently been denied a research position and is currently stuck teaching science to uninterested students. During a soccer game with his wife, daughter, and friends, the world is shocked when armed individuals materialize in a flash of light, informing viewers on television that they’ve traveled from thirty years into the future seeking assistance to preserve humanity. It's revealed that an alien threat known as the White Spikes unexpectedly appeared and has put humankind on the brink of extinction. Governments around the globe send troops to fight in the future, but at a steep cost; subsequently, a global draft is implemented to replace losses. Dan is eventually drafted and given only 24 hours to prepare before being sent for a seven-day deployment, after which he will return. He considers fleeing and seeks out his estranged father (J.K. Simmons), who holds a deep distrust of authority and operates in questionable ways, leading Dan to keep him far from his daughter. Dan ultimately deploys and discovers a bleak future where cities are destroyed and the formidable enemy is omnipresent. As the stakes escalate, Dan must join forces with the resistance leader to devise a strategy for combating the aliens and saving humanity before it’s too late. The film contains decent special effects and action sequences, and I often wondered why different approaches weren't taken; however, the movie does eventually attempt to resolve many of these questions. Although the conclusion might feel excessive and somewhat contrived, the film provides an enjoyable, action-packed diversion if you’re willing to suspend disbelief and avoid overthinking things. While echoes of previous science fiction and horror movies can be detected, the cast and storyline are effective, making it a cut above many films sold to streaming platforms, and deserving of viewing. 3.5 stars out of 5
