She’s still fantastic; I would bet anything on it! It’s genuinely difficult for me to put together a meaningful review of The Titfield Thunderbolt, because I've cherished this film for almost forty years. It was one of those special childhood experiences where, as someone who clearly owned a train set, I saw this vibrant {it was Ealing Studios’ first colour film} and absorbed it like some kind of enchantment. Naturally, I didn’t understand the underlying ideas at that time; I simply enjoyed the train and the unusual characters making me laugh. But now, in our current era, the movie remains remarkably strong compared to many other films from Ealing Studios, and those themes it explored then are unfortunately a reality today. Communities are fighting to maintain their identities, companies focused on profit disregard tradition, and the perspective of ordinary people seems lost. And what’s most disheartening is that the sense of community—that “you shall not pass us” attitude—has disappeared, replaced by worry and unhappiness. I often think about whether T.E.B. Clarke realized when he began writing The Titfield Thunderbolt that he wasn't just crafting a charming story about villagers protecting their local railway line. He captured something more – a moment in time from Britain’s past, a glimpse of a transport system that was still ten years away from significant upheaval. I feel very connected to The Titfield Thunderbolt; it really does feel like family. When I watch it now, it transports me away from the complicated and rushed world we live in today. I laugh, sometimes even cry with happiness, and occasionally get upset at the antagonists. That’s the true power of cinema – when a small village, a little train, and some bravery set against a rural backdrop can evoke such feelings in someone. 10/10
